Navigating Career Transitions Over 55

I shared last week that my daughter, Kaitlyn, would be joining our retirement planning team at Blake Wealth Management. That means she and our granddaughter have been with us for the last week, so she can train and prepare for her new role. She will work remotely from home near Austin, Texas. Fortunately, that also means we have both our children at home. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy being an "empty-nester", but my heart is truly full when both our children (and grandchild) are back in the house.

What's your favorite story about being an empty-nester or having your children back home?

"The last thing I want you to do is spend the last five or 10 years of your professional life in a position that you're miserable in. We want you doing things that you love to do."

Last week marked the final day of our annual pie order for clients — one of our favorite traditions during this season of giving. Every year, we look forward to catching up with so many of you as you stop by to pick up your pies, and we love hearing the stories from those being delivered to family and friends across the country. It’s always such a joy to see how this small gesture brings smiles and sparks connection, whether near or far. This year was, in fact, a record for the number of pies...

This week, I had a conversation that reminded me just how deeply emotional money can be. A client shared that an extremely difficult life experience had changed the way she views uncertainty — and as we talked, it became clear that her concerns weren’t really about numbers or spreadsheets. They were about what money represents: safety, stability, and the sense of control we all crave when life feels unpredictable. So often, the financial choices we make are driven more by emotion than logic —...

This past week, one of our clients shared that they had paid off their mortgage — years ahead of schedule. On paper, the “math” might have said to keep it, but that’s why "financial" planning is not always about the numbers. Just a few years ago, they felt stuck because of debt. They made the decision to take control of their financial future, and now they’re completely debt-free — other than regular monthly bills. The feeling of accomplishment and optimism they shared far outweighed what any...
