When Work Becomes Optional

Good morning, Simply Retirement Community!

Welcome to the weekly newsletter that reminds us that retirement is not the end of the road; it is the start of a new journey.

This week, our family is celebrating something pretty special.

My grandmother, Mema, turned 91.

Ninety-one years of life, experience, resilience, and love. When you really stop and think about that, it’s incredible.

We traveled to Amarillo to spend time with her. It is something we started several years ago because you just never know how much time you may have.

And that really is what this week has been about.

Slowing down a bit. Sitting together. Just being there.

One morning, we were sitting with her eating breakfast. Her favorite thing in the world is a jalapeño cheddar biscuit egg sandwich from Whataburger… and she only gets it when Dawn and I come to visit.

And in the middle of that simple moment, she said something that stuck with me.

She talked about how fast life goes by.

When you are a child, you just want things to go faster. You want to get older.

Then one day, you are older… and all you want is for time to slow down.

There is something about hearing that from someone who has lived 91 years that just hits differently.

It makes you pause.

It makes you appreciate the moment you are in a little more.

And it reminds you not to wait too long to spend time with the people who matter most.

Retirement is when you have enough money to cover your basic expenses so you don’t have to work. Everything after that is choosing work that actually matters to you.

BERNADETTE JOY

When Work Becomes Optional: Redefining Retirement with Bernadette Joy

What happens when retirement stops being a finish line and starts being a choice?

What if the biggest barrier between you and financial freedom isn't the math, it's the mindset?

In this episode, I sit down with Bernadette Joy, author and CEO of CRUSH Your Money Goals®, for a candid conversation about what it really takes to take control of your finances, redefine what retirement means to you, and finally stop waiting for the "right" time to live the life you actually want.

We talk about the moment Bernadette discovered she had $72,000 in student loan debt she didn't know was growing, how she paid off $300,000 in debt and reached financial independence, and why she believes financial fluency matters far more than financial literacy. This conversation will challenge how you think about money, work, and what retirement could actually look like for you.

Key Takeaways:

  • How a shocking student loan balance became the turning point that led Bernadette to pay off $300,000 in debt
  • Why learning finances is more like learning a language than solving a math problem, and what that means for women approaching retirement
  • How the loss of a client changed Bernadette's perspective on waiting for the "right time" to retire
  • What financial independence actually looks like when work becomes optional, not obligatory
  • Why women advocating for themselves in financial conversations is not just empowering, it is essential
  • And more!

I recently joined Tony Steuer as a guest on the Get Ready Before Life Happens podcast to talk about how women are redefining retirement, decision-making, and what it means to use money intentionally.

As women become the primary recipients of the great wealth transition, I explain why traditional financial conversations need to evolve. We explore why women often approach money through the lens of goals and family impact, how caregiving and pay gaps shape financial outcomes, and why listening, education, and partnership matter more than perfect plans.
