This week, I share 7 Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring a Financial Advisor. They’re critically important questions, but may be ones you’ve already considered in some form. Questions about process, communication, coordination, and how your retirement income and tax strategy will actually come together.
But if I had to add one more question to ask a financial advisor that you may not have thought about, it might be this,
“How will you help make my life better — not just manage my money?”
I recently had a conversation with a client who is navigating a job transition. She’s exploring what’s next, but not simply looking to replace a paycheck. She wants something different from what she was doing before — something energizing, something meaningful, something she can truly enjoy as she prepares for retirement.
Our discussion moved well beyond investments and projections. It focused on purpose and direction. Through our professional network (and a former podcast guest 😀), I was able to connect her with a professional who specializes in helping high-achieving women evaluate new opportunities, refine their résumé and LinkedIn presence, strengthen interview skills, and position themselves to stand out in a competitive market — not just land a job, but secure one they’re proud of.
Not every advisor sees that as part of the role. I believe it is. Because retirement planning isn’t just about optimizing assets — it’s about helping you build a life you’re genuinely excited to live.

7 Questions Every Woman Should Ask Before Hiring a Financial Advisor
Choosing a financial advisor is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as you approach retirement, especially if you’re navigating it on your own.
Yet many women don’t realize how much clarity and confidence can come from simply asking the right questions before committing to a long-term relationship.
In this episode, I walk through seven essential questions every woman should consider before hiring or changing a financial advisor. We discuss why so many women change advisors after losing a spouse, how to evaluate an advisor’s process, and what to listen for when recommendations are presented. I also explain why retirement income planning, Social Security strategy, and tax coordination require a different level of focus than simply saving for retirement, and how to think about value beyond just the fee.
Key Takeaways:
- Why the commonly cited statistic about women changing advisors highlights the need for better conversations
- The importance of understanding an advisor’s process before agreeing to work together
- How to evaluate whether recommendations truly align with your goals, values, and concerns
- Why retirement income planning, Social Security, and tax strategy require specialized focus
- How to assess value beyond fees, including adaptability, communication, and long-term partnership
- And more!
